The SLC30A8 gene is involved in regulation of insulin due to it coding for the zinc transporter protein member 8 which is found in the β-cells of the pancreas. Zinc – an essential trace element for maintaining homeostasis – has a dynamic role as a ‘secondary messenger’ in cells involved in insulin signalling and glucose homeostasis; mediating through phosphorylation of key receptors. This gene variant impacts the SLC30A8 gene may contribute to the variance seen in fasting blood glucose responses.
