The LPL gene encodes for the enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which is involved in the breakdown of triglycerides Lower levels of this enzyme, caused by a variant of the LPL gene, lead to accumulation of triglycerides and increased levels of very-low density lipoproteins (VLDLs), which can impact health. One of the alleles for this gene variant has been linked to elevated high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels which provide anti-inflammatory actions that can improve health.
