The ALDH2 is a gene variant involved in the oxidative metabolism of alcohol within the mitochondria. The rare allele of this variant is a form found more commonly in East Asian populations compared to the global population, with the rare allele found in 17% of the population. It has been associated with the reddening of the face and neck following alcohol intake – a phenomenon known as ‘Asian Flush’.
