The Importance of APOA5

The FitnessGenes Science team has finalised its research on our latest gene result, and your personal APOA5 result is now ready to view in our members’ area.

APOA5 is a molecule that helps regulates triglyceride (dietary fat) levels. As excessive levels of triglycerides are linked to health problems including heart disease, we all should know if we are at risk, and how we can alter our diet if we are.

APOA5 and Genetics

So what role do genetics play in this? We ask Dr Nathan West to give us a brief introduction.

"The APOA5 variation we look at has been shown to effect your risk of increased triglyceride levels.  Individuals who carry the AG or GG variation of this gene and consume a diet high in omega 6 fatty acids have an increased risk of elevated triglycerides."

"However, if your FitnessGenes results show you to be in the increased risk group, your Action Blueprint offers dietary and supplement advice to help combat it."

"If you do carry the AG or GG variation, my main advice would be to avoiding cooking with oils high in omega 6 (such as sunflower oil), or grilling food rather then frying it.  Increasing your consumption of omega 3 fatty acids from oily fish such as salmon, or taking a quality fish oil supplement, will also help overcome any risks."
