What is Whey Protein?

Whey is a mixture of proteins isolated from the liquid material created as a by-product of cheese production. It’s a natural product so is certainly not something that anyone should fear. Whey protein has the following researched health benefits:

1. Reduction in blood pressure

2. Decreased levels of LDL (bad cholesterol)

3. Reduced levels of inflammation as indicated by a reduced C-reactive protein

4. Increased muscle mass

5. Improved liver function (this was using a group of obese women as the test subjects)

6. Improved immune function

7. Improved CD4 count in people with HIV

8. Increased levels of the bodies most potent antioxidant, glutathione

9. Increased life span of lab animals

10. Major contributor to fat loss

11. Increased satiety

Mark Gilbert talks a lot about whey protein being one of the healthiest dietary sources of protein available:

‘It is certainly the healthiest dietary protein. In fact, forget about just “protein”, you can make a fairly good argument that whey protein is one of the world’s most healthy “foods”! It jacks up levels of your body’s most powerful and broad-spectrum antioxidant (glutathione), it supports liver health, reduces many of the risk factors for heart disease, decreases inflammation, improves blood sugar control, and improves immunity.’ Mark Gilbert
